Students in the Introduction to STEM Pathways and Careers course at East Feliciana Middle School learned earlier this year about the difference between an open and closed circuit. Some students had to create their circuit several times before the LED bulb lit up. Persistence, adaptiveness, and curiosity are characteristics of innovative scientists. This course at East Feliciana Middle School, offered in partnership with LSU, is part of the growing continuum of STEAM learning available for students in our schools in grades PreK-12.

Last month, EF STEAM students held a mini spa day for their chickens. They hypothesized that some of the chickens were egg-bound because they weren’t finding as many eggs, so they let the chickens soak in warm water and epsom salt to help them release any lodged eggs. Later they discovered the chickens had found another location to lay eggs!
